brief vitae
I was born in Girona, Spain, in 1964 and moved two years later to Madrid, where I have been living ever since. I graduated in physics at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1987 and got a physics PhD at the same university in 1992. Since then I work in the Mathematics department of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where I was appointed as an associate professor in 1995 and became a full professor in 2011. My research field is statistical physics. For a long period, including my PhD, I applied density functional theory to complex fluids (liquid crystals, mixtures, colloids, etc.), mainly to map out their phase behaviour and phase transitions. I no longer work in this area though. For a short interval when I moved to Universidad Carlos III I worked in semiconductor theory —a research that I discontinued long ago. My current interests focus on the theory of complex systems, both biologically and socially motivated, and on evolutionary dynamics, very much related to the former. I am a member of the Interdisciplinary Group of Complex Systems (GISC), a research group gathering people from departments of physics, mathematics, and biology at several institutions, and whose main interest is the physics of complex systems. I am also a member of the Institute for Biocomputation and Physics of Complex Systems (BIFI) since March 2012; an Associate researcher of York Centre for Complex System Analysis (YCCSA), at The University of York, since September 2013; and a member of UC3M-BS Institute of Financial Big Data (IFiBiD), since September 2015. My Erdős number is 3.
